Class 56

56078 + 56113 double up on 6V62 Tilbury - Llanwern steel empties, seen here passing Pilning road bridge on the 17th of May 2014

DCR's Fertis grey liveried 56091 powers past Hinksey yard with 6Z92 Didcot Power Station - Calvert loaded flyash on the 4th of June 2013

56094 screams its way through Undy on the evening of the 6th of June 2013 with 6Z53 Teigngrace - Chirk loaded logs, a bit of a gamble this one as it was booked to stop at Bristol Temple Meads for nearly an hour, had this come through early the sun would have been way to head on, as it was it was pretty much on time and well worth the effort!

56094 makes a fine sight climbing the gradient at Pilning on the 6th of February 2013 with 6Z52 Chirk - Teigngrace, how this picture was captured in sun I will never know as where I was stood was in full cloud!

Screaming well 56094 hammers through Parson Street on the 9th of January 2013 with 6Z52 Chirk - Teigngrace empty log carriers, never did I think that in the year 2013 would I be seeing this superb class making a comeback and in decent numbers as well, long may it continue!

Colas grid 56094 shines brightly as it passes Magor on the 9th of January 2013 with 6Z52 Chirk - Teigngrace empty log carriers

Shortly after a heavy shower has passed through the Parson Street area Colas Rail Freights 56094 powers nicely through at the head of 6Z52 Chirk - Teigngrace on the 17th of October 2012

56104 heads a single refurbished Chilton Railways Mk 3 coach, seen here passing Challow on the 24th of February 2016 while working 5Z34 Bristol Barton Hill - Wembley

The main target for the evening 56105 slowly makes its way towards the Severn Tunnel as it passes Pilning on the 18th of April 2013 with 6Z53 Teigngrace - Carlisle loaded logs, Colas have proved that there is still life in these classic locomotives and maybe EWS were a tad hasty in dispatching of them in favour of the rather souless GM class 66

56302 is seen seconds after exiting Chipping Sodbury tunnel on the 16th of April 2014 with 6V62 Tilbury - Llanwern steel empties, alot of bank side vegitation clearance has been undertaken at this location which has opened up the shot quite nicely

56302 screams along the main at Undy on the 11th of July 2013 with 6Z53 Teigngrace - Chirk loaded logs, the train could be heard all the way from Severn Tunnel Junction, certainly made the trip over to Wales worthwhile

A familiar story unfolded on the 18th of February 2013, a day that promised so much but in reality delivered so little! 56302 is seen here crossing the Bishton Flyover with 6Z36 Llanwern - Long Marston conveying 31 JSA's for storage plus one IHA tagged on the back in what can best be described as hazy sun, more used to this kind of weather in June or July

I make no appologies for including this shot as a proper loco hauling a freight along the GWML are very rare events indeed, and of course to go with the event the weather duly decided that it would be dull! Anyway here is 56302 screaming nicely through Acton Turville with 6Z56 Wembley - Cardiff Canton on the 27th of February 2012, the wagons in tow were off to Cardiff for attention before the start of a new scrap flow for DCR, lets hope this isn't a false dawn for the super grids after the one train which ran last year!

With a cloud of fly ash dust being left in its wake DCR's green example 56303 thrashes through Hinksey on the 5th of March 2013 with 6Z91 Calvert - Didcot Power Station

Every now and again a working comes along that makes all of the failed attempts at decent shots seem worth while! On the 20th of August 2012 56303 was due to work a 6Z93 Cardiff Tidal - Rotherham move via Lydney and Gloucester but a late change of plan saw it rerouted via the Severn Tunnel, Swindon and Oxford. After being able to hear the loco for a good 2 minutes before it came into view with sanders at full blast 56303 screamed slowly up the incline at Patchway with its hefty load of blast furnace slag in tow, I for one never thought I would hear a grid make this kind of noise again, long may it continue!

56311 powers through Hinksey on the 15th of February 2013 with 6Z91 Calvert - Didcot Power Station, all seems perfect with this picture but it was so close to disaster with 4M66 Southampton - Birch Coppice approaching on the relief line from the south about to wipe the shot out, with the northbound service already entering the loop behind us it seemed the gallery here were doomed with no sight of the grid, then the unmistakeable scream of the 56 could be heard as it passed through Oxford station, thankfully the grid was flying and with seconds to spare the shot was in the bag, superb!

With a slice of blue sky sitting over the River Severn I decided to gamble and head out for some grid action, and I am glad I did! 56311 is seen thumping it's way round the curve towards Purton on the 19th of June 2012 with 6Z69 Derby - Cardiff Tidal loaded scrap

In some great evening light DCR's 56311 makes a fine sight and sound as it powers 6Z56 Shipley - Cardiff Tidal near Lydney on the 25th of May 2012

56312 passes by Hinksey Lake on the 29th of November 2012 with 6Z91 Calvert - Didcot Power Station flyash empties, this train is being run by DCR on behalf of DB Schenker and may revert to the more boring 66 haulage in the very near future for the remainder of the contract

This working had 'farce' written all over it, first it was on, then it was off, then on but late, thankfully making it with the sun still gleaming on the front, 6Z56 Cardiff Tidal - Shipley with 56312 at the helm trundles through on the main at Magor running a little over 60 minutes late on the 29th of March 2012, lovely stuff!

This was a working in my eyes that just couldn't be missed! 56312 + 56302 are both seen powering a 6Z69 Burton - Cardiff Tidal loaded scrap working through Bullo Pill on the 26th of March 2012, the train was rescheduled after the original working failed near Burton a few nights previous, 56312 has been repainted from its rather garish purple livery into a slightly less garish grey with livery embellishments advertising a forthcoming 'Railfest' event, to hear that lovely scream of a grid working hard is a sound that will always be welcome to my ears!

56312 leads 47739 through Brent Knoll as 0Z76 Washwood Heath - Tavistock Junction on the 19th of January 2011
