Class 60

Carrying the unique 'Switch On To Safety' branding, the first 60 to get a full overhaul by DB Schenker 60007 leads the saturday only 6B33 Theale - Margam empty bogie tanks through Acton Turville on the 29th of September 2012

With the tide at its peak 60007 sweeps through Gatcombe with 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh on the 27th of March 2012, in what was a very warm spell of weather for spring you would be forgiven for thinking it was summer, even though there are still signs of last years autumnal colour in the trees above the loco and first couple of tanks

After being at this location only a couple of weeks previous I wasn't expecting to be back so soon, but when this working appeared on the radar it just had to be done, thankfully the weather was perfect at the right time of day! Seen here applying the power as it passes Stenson is 60007 with 6Z18 Ratcliffe Power Station - Warrington empty HTA's, 30th of January 2012

60007 makes a rather swift getaway after its scheduled stop at Undy and is seen thumping its way through Severn Tunnel Junction on the 28th of September 2011 with 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh, after initially being released from overhaul on the 23rd of August on test the 'Tug' was then put through the paint facility at Toton and out shopped in standard DB Schenker livery with added 'SWITCH ON TO SAFETY' decals

The first overhauled Class 60 in the shape of former LoadHaul branded 007 shows off its shiny new red coat while working 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh for the first time on the 28th of September 2011, the loco is adorned with the slogan 'SWITCH ON TO SAFETY' and named 'The Spirit Of Tom Kendel'

During a short stop off en route to the Barnetby area for a couple of days 60009 is captured rumbling along the freight only branch at Barrow On Trent with 6E54 Kingsbury - Humber on the 28th of June 2010

In the low afternoon sun 60010 powers through Portskewett on the 10th of December 2012 with the when equired 6B25 Westerleigh - Robeston

60010 powers through Gossington at the head of 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh on the 8th of December 2012, thankfully the high level cloud to the east stayed well clear of the sun

Seen departing Pilning loop on the 9th of September 2010 60010 hauls 6B33 Theale - Robeston, it will then sit at the entrance to the Severn Tunnel and await a HST then a multiple unit to come in the opposite direction before it can proceed in its booked path to Wales

60010 rumbles through Westerleigh Village with 6B47 Westerleigh - Robeston on the 31st of August 2010, this working can always be heard coming as it usually sounds its horn as it pulls away from the oil terminal and will certainly sound it again as it approaches the foot crossing just out of shot towards the rear of the train

60010 passes Howsham with 6E41 Westerleigh - Lindsey on the 29th of June 2010, after a agonising wait for nearly 35 minutes with the sun playing 'hide behind the floater' it was a relief when this passed in pretty strong light, when freshly painted the EW&S examples of the 60 fleet looked quite smart but are now looking in a worse state than the original two tone grey examples

With the weather forecast set fair for the evening of the 31st of May 2011 i decided to head to Purton for a shot which i've tried on several occasions but never succeeded at, on arrival the cloud was breaking and all was looking good, unfortunately a unexpected layer of thin cloud pushed across the sun and darkened the scene just as 6B47 Westerleigh - Robeston was due, but thankfully 60011 and its rake of tanks was running around 1 hour late and with around 5 minutes to spare the light improved substantially and my heart could be removed from my mouth, Result!

60011 makes a impressive sight as it roars along with its rake of discharged bogie tanks on the 3rd of June 2011, seen passing just south of Lydney with 6B47 Westereleigh - Robeston, thankfully the many floaters above stayed well clear of the sun

After a swift drive from Bristol a second shot of 60011 on 6B47 Westerleigh - Robeston was had at Undy on the 24th of May 2011, well with the light the way it was it would have been rude not to!

60011 Starts out on its journey with 6B47 Westerleigh - Robeston on the 24th of May 2011 and is seen passing Westerleigh Village, it will very shortly pass under a viaduct that carries the Great Western Mainline

60011 skirts the River Severn at Gatcombe on the 21st of April 2011 in charge of a short 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh, due to the settled area of high pressure which has been prominant for well over a week to this date the visibility as can clearly be seen is appaling! When looking straight up it was clear blue sky and no cloud to be seen anywhere

As the sun battles through the evening haze 60011 approaches Chepstow with 6B47 Westerleigh - Robeston on the 19th of April, the DB Schenker livery really is eye catching but at this point in time this 60 looks filthy and in need of a damn good wash!

60011 approaches Pilning on the 30th of March 2011 with 6B33 Theale - Robeston, really like this livery on the 60's, just hope that it doesnt fade and turn pink

Heading over the unmistakable Bishton Flyover 60011 heads 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh on the 11th of January 2011 with the morning frost reluctant to clear and a little weak light breaking through it made for a very pleasing outcome

60011 hammers through Charfield on the 9th of January 2011 with 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh, this former Mainline blue loco is the first of its class to be branded in DB Schenker red

On the 16th of September 2010 60011 dropped onto 6M00 Humber - Kingsbury and after seeing it at Melton Ross in dire light and having to travel back to Bristol the decision was taken to stop off on the way home for another stab at it, Portway was the chosen location just south of Elford loop. So glad that this one paid off as my next encounter with this loco it had been painted in DB Schenker red

60013 approaches Pilning road bridge with 6B33 Theale - Robeston on the 19th of April 2011

60013 approaches Pilning on the 7th of April 2011 with 6B33 Theale - Robeston, one of the best things about this working is the vast amount of different tank types and liveries used and always seem to get shuffled pretty well from one day to the next

The main reason for the drive down to the Westbury area on the 9th of March 2011 was to capture 60013 working 7V16 Fareham - Whatley, With both of the local landmarks clearly visible in the background it made for a pretty pleasing sight

60015 powers through Gossington on the 12th of March 2011 with one of the last remaining 60 diagramed 60 hauled freights in the UK, with its rake of discharged bogie tanks in tow it is seen forming 6E41 Westerleigh - Lindsey

60017 slows for its booked stop at Undy on the 19th of August 2013 with 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh

What a way to end a day! 60017 finally makes an appearance at Westerleigh Village with 6B47 Westerleigh - Robeston on the 30th of April 2013, after being perched here for what seemed an eternity the sound of the locos horn was heard as it approached the foot crossing just behind the trees to the right of the picture, in the end the working departed the terminal 54 minutes late but it was well worth the wait in the end

60017 rolls through Pilning on the 18th of April 2013 with 6B33 Theale - Robeston, rather lucky to capture this as this was running around 60 minutes late and was not the reason for me venturing out on this day!

Pristine DB Schenker 60019 'Port Of Grimsby & Immingham' glides off of the Bishton flyover on the 8th of November 2012 with 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh

60020 nears the end of its journey with 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh as it passes through Westerleigh Villiage on the single track branch that leads to the oil terminal on the 16th of April 2014

60020 is seen leading 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh through Undy on the 14th of April 2014, as usual the main event that we were stood waiting for (56302 heading to Long Marston) turned up in cloud, no wonder I have gone back to fishing!!

60020 heads the Saturday only when required 6V70 Lindsey - Didcot loaded tanks through Catholme on the 25th of May 2013, after reaching Didcot the train will recess overnight before heading to its destination of Colnbrook for discharging

60024 trundles through Pilning down towards the Severn Tunnel to await its path with 6B33 Theale - Robeston on the 31st of July 2015

60040 heads through Magor on the beautifully crisp winters morning of the 29th of December 2014 with 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh loaded bogie tanks, at this point the train was running 40 minutes early but would be held to nearly its correct time at Severn Tunnel Junction before heading off towards Lydney

60040 is captured at Gossington on the 7th of May 2013 while working 6E41 Westerleigh - Lindsey

Looking resplendent in its new shiny red coat 60040 rounds the bend at Portskewett with 6V05 Round Oak - Margam on the 27th of July 2012, one small admission is that I have made a class 150 that made a untimely appearance behind the loco disappear!

Newly refurbished 60040 trundles down the hill at Pilning on the 24th of July 2012 with 6B33 Theale - Robeston, a shame to see that this loco lost its unique Army livery during overhaul but at least it kept its distinctive large 'The Territorial Army Centenery' nameplates

After 3 long hard days with limited sunshine perseverance pays off as 'Army Tug' 60040 dropped onto the iron ore circuit, seen passing Barnetby with a rake of empties on 6K22 Santon - Immingham on the 16th of September 2010

In amongst the autumnal colour of Acton Turville 60045 looks and indeed sounds rather sorry for itself as it truly thumps through on the 27th of October 2012 with 6B33 Theale - Margam, with a rather large oil spill down the side this particular tug does not look very well at all, so glad to get this member of the 60 fleet for a decent shot as since returning to the hobby it is one that has evaded me!

After heading to Eastleigh in the morning 60048 returns at the sharp end of 6V38 Marchwood - Didcot Yard 'Wagonload' with 66014 DIT seen passing Cholsey Manor Farm on the 8th of October 2010

With the clock on St Mary's Church Magor reading 10:22 on the 17th of October 2012 the last active member of the class 60 fleet to be adorned with the original EW&S livery is seen passing, 60049 slowly makes its way through at the head of 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh, thankfully the DMU which it was being regulated for in the distance wasn't approaching any faster!

Deflector less 60049 soaks up some super Autumnal light as it powers through Gossington with 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh on the 17th of November 2011, with nothing to shade the line this is a great location to capture this working in the months where the sun sits lower in the sky

60049 makes a fine sight and sound as it passes the peaceful location of Barrow On Trent while working 6E54 Kingsbury - Humber on the 7th of March 2011

60049 slows in preperation for its stop in Elford Loop as it passes Catholme on the 30th of September 2010 at the head of 6M57 Lindsey - Kingsbury

60049 glides down the main at Pilning with its rake of empty tanks while working 6B33 Theale - Robeston on the 17th of August 2010, of note on this loco is that its front deflector under the buffers has been missing for some time now and is a rather odd sight

60054 powers through Gossington on the 20th of April 2015 with its uniform rake of EWS branded TEA's forming 6E41 Westerleigh - Lindsey, thankfully this was only running a matter of 7 minutes late at this point as much later and the sun would have vanished from the front!

60054 is captured at Pilning on the 6th of June 2013 as it works 6B33 Theale - Robeston discharged tanks

60054 thumps southbound near Lydney on the 5th of December 2012 with 6V05 Round Oak - Margam empty steel

With two very differing parts making up the backdrop for the frame in the shape of a densely poulated residential area in the foreground, and rolling countryside in the distance, recently overhauled 60054 rumbles through Somerton near Newport with 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh on the 25th of November 2011

Still gleaming after its recent overhaul at Toton TMD 60054 heads 6B33 Theale - Margam through Ram Hill near Coalpit Heath on the 12th of November 2011, although pretty smart at the moment when more and more examples of the class are released in this livery the non DB Schenker members will become more sought after

60059 ambles down the gradient at Pilning on the 21st of April 2015 with 6B33 Theale - Robeston, yet another DB red tug at this soon to be doomed location!

60059 rounds the curve at Undy with 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh on the 18th of April 2015, it is only a matter of time before this shot along with so many others will be lost forever due to the electrification of the GWML

60059 powers through Gossington on the 5th of November 2012 with a slightly early running 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh, in the field to the right evidence can be seen of the rather awful summer of 2012 with a whole crop of ruined wheat on show

Yet another DB Schenker red tug that has been recently released from Toton is 60062, seen here on the afternoon of the 11th of July 2013 with 6B33 Theale - Robeston at Pilning

60063 thunders through Gatcombe and over the public foot crossing on the 8th of June 2013 with 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh

60063 powers towards Lydney on the 19th of August 2013 with 6M81 Margam - Round Oak loaded steel

Super Tug 60063 hammers along with 6B47 Westerleigh - Robeston discharged bogie tanks on the 19th of June 2012, seen here just to the south of Lydney running around 25 minutes late

Another addition to the growing DB Schenker fleet of overhauled 60's is 60063, seen here on the 8th of May 2012 with 6B33 Theale - Robeston as it rolls through Pilning station in one of the last sunny patches of the day

60063 heads 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh through Cam and Dursley on the 15th of November 2010, again running late and preventing the framing of the house at this location due to the shadows off of the road bridge

The 10th of November 2010 was forecast to be a clear blue day so with that in mind what could go wrong in my hunt for 60063? Late running! Originally camped at Undy I was forced to move to Severn Tunnel Junction, with the sun just hanging on the front it still turned out ok

Still putting the miles in even though it is one of a select few Class 60's out on the mainline that remain unrefurbished EWS liveried 60065 rolls almost silently out of Pilning loop on the 21st of June 2014 with 6B33 Theale - Margam

After many many attempts I finally have a picture of 60065 worthy of inclusion, seen here at Magor on the 9th of January 2013 the work stained tug heads 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh

'Drax Powering Tomorrow' adorned 60066 eases down towards Pilning seen here at Cattybrook on the 21st of May 2015 while working 6B33 Theale - Robeston

60071 passes through Acton Turville with the Saturday only 6B33 Theale - Margam on the 11th of February 2012

60071 sweeps around the curve at Huntingford with 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh on the 27th of January 2012, surely this now very tatty member of the Class 60 fleet is a prime candidate for the DB Schenker overhaul program

60071 leads the retimed 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh through Gossington on the 5th of December 2011, passing this location 2 hours later than usual due to a defective wagon on the inward working to Robeston the previous night

60071 makes light work of its consist of empty tanks whilst working 6B33 Theale - Robeston on the 29th of September 2011 as it passes Shrivenham

60071 slowly rounds the curve at Undy to await its booked stop just West of Severn Tunnel Junction with 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh loaded fuel tanks, with the trees and the houses in the background turning decidedly shadowy it was only moments until it was lights out! 14th of September 2011

Its always a gamble going to a location specifically for one working especially with it being a 80 mile round trip and the journey mainly undertaken in cloud cover! But on the 22nd of September 2010 when 60071 dropped onto 7C28 Exeter Riverside - Westbury it just had to be done, the preceding HST had passed in brightness but thankfully by the time the 'Tug' appeared the light was not bad at all, good times!

60074 leads 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh through Magor on the 18th of February 2016, now devoid of the Teenage Spirit nameplates and the attractive light blue livery 60074 now looks like the majority of the small fleet of active DB Schenker 60's

60074 shines brightly on the 10th of October 2013 as it slowly works its way through Undy with 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh loaded fuel tanks

60074 rounds the curve at Charfield on the 18th of February 2013 with 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh

Filthy Teenage Cancer Trust 60074 passes the gallery at Acton Turville on the 2nd of February 2013 with 6B33 Theale - Margam oil empties

60074 makes light work of its rake of discharged bogie tanks as it rumbles through the countyside near Lydney with 6B47 Westerleigh - Robeston on the 25th of May 2012

Looking more blue than a blue thing! 60074 rumbles through Magor with a retimed and also at this point delayed 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh on the 5th of March 2012, this was the first real break of sunshine for nearly an hour, sometimes luck does go our way!

60074 powers through Caldicot with ease at the head of 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh on the 6th of March 2012

60074 ambles along the main shortly after passing Pilning with 6B33 Theale - Robeston on the 27th of March 2012, it might just be me but every time I have seen this tug since its overhaul I am more convinced the blue is a shade lighter than previously? Or maybe my eyes are just failing already!

After several visits to this spot a half decent effort at 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh was finally achieved on the 11th of July 2011, after sitting in pretty much full sun for near on two hours a bank of cloud started to roll in from the north but held back just long enough for 60074 to power through with its full load of 29 tanks

With the 6A29 'wagonload' service to Didcot just disappearing in the opposite direction Teenage Cancer Trust Tug 60074 thumps into view with 6B47 Westerleigh - Robeston, running around 25 minutes late at this point the shadows were starting to make their presence felt, 13th June 2011

After working a recent railtour 60074 is still looking very tidy indeed as it passes Gossington with 6E41 Westerleigh - Lindsey on the 7th of April 2011

On the 6th of October 2010 60074 was reported to be working a 6Z35 Moreton On Lugg - Acton, so a mad rush at work ensued, at one point I didn't think I was going to make it as it was running early but thankfully it was held to time in Pilning loop and i made it to Patchway with time to spare, and what a result, full blue, cracking wagons, one of my faves from the year 2010

60076 plods through Ponthir on the 12th of May 2015 with 6M51 Baglan Bay - Chirk loaded logs, nowhere near as impressive as the sight and sound of a 56 here on the same working!

60079 thumps through Barrow On Trent on the 3rd of April 2013 with 6E54 Kingsbury - Humber

60079 thuds over the recently partially cleared Bishton Flyover on the 4th of October with a full length 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh

A more frequent addition to the freight scene of late is the resumption of 6B25 Westerleigh - Robeston fuel empties, at this time working one day a week if required, seen at the head of it on the 28th of March 2012 is another member of the growing band of 60's to get the red paintbrush treatment 60079, seen here passing just to the south of Lydney

Elusive grey 'Tug' 60084 is put to good use while working 6B33 Theale - Robeston through Ram Hill on the 23rd of March 2011, with no reports of the train for nearly 2 hours fear was growing in the gallery that it wasn't going to show up, but the sound of a deep thumping noise in the distance laid all fears to rest, towards the rear cab door evidence of the previous operator can be seen in the shape of a small red stripe which was part of the Transrail livery

After a quick drive from Magor 60091 is captured again as it gains speed after its signal check, seen here as it is about to pass through Severn Tunnel Junction station on the 10th of December 2012 with 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh

60091 slowly makes its way through Magor on the 10th of December 2012 with 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh

60091 is seen literally crawling through Chellaston on the 12th of October 2012 at the head of 6E54 Kingsbury - Humber, after spying the tug through the trees in the distance and thinking it would appear in front of me within a couple of minutes I duly got in position on my ladder, but I was mistaken! A good eight minutes passed before the red beast plodded into view, all the time playing dodge the cloud

The driver of 60091 applies the power as it rounds the curve at Gossington on the 24th of July 2012 with 6E41 Westerleigh - Lindsey

Resplendent DB Schenker tug 60091 thunders towards Cam and Dursley with 6E41 Westerleigh - Lindsey on the 3rd of March 2012, the earlier saturday running certainly helps with the light angle at this location

With snow dusted hills in the distance 60091 thumps through Somerton near Newport with 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh on the 3rd of February 2012

In some gorgeous afternoon winter light 60091 slowly negotiates the branch line on the final approach to Westerleigh Oil Terminal on the 1st of February 2012, running some 205 minutes late at this point this was 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh, most of the delay was caused by the loco slipping to a stand in west Wales in the early morning

Another recent 60 to receive a full overhaul and paint into DB Schenker red is 60091, after pausing on the freight only Sheet Stores branch for a passing Voyager 60091 traverses the point work of Stenson Junction as it slowly gets 6M57 Lindsey - Kingsbury under way again on the 13th of January 2012

In cracking low winter light ex coal sector tug 60091 heads 6E41 Westerleigh - Lindsey through Cam and Dursley on the 15th of November 2010

60092 just about avoids the evening shadows near Lydney on the 12th of May 2015 while working 6B47 Westerleigh - Robeston

60096 rumbles through Patchway on the 19th of May 2011 with 6B33 Theale - Robeston, if all class members were as reliable as this one i'm sure more of them would still be in traffic but instead its the same pool of around 20 examples on constant rotation, with a refurbishment plan currently under way for part of the fleet there is some hope for the future of the last major British built diesel locomotive

Filthy yet very reliable 60096 storms through Coedkernew working 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh on the 12th of May 2011, due to engineering work taking place on the up and down relief lines this working was guaranteed to use the main which provides a much more pleasing angle

With only about 5 minutes left before the sun dipped behind the hill side for the evening 60096 thumps south near Lydney on the 6th of April 2011 with 6B47 Westerleigh - Robeston, such a shame this loco is filthy as a clean loco would have been stunning in such light

Finally the sun breaks through the high level 'squiff' and vapour trails from jets above as 60096 heads a shortened 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh through Gatcombe on the 6th of April 2011, 5 minutes before this appeared a group of 'orange men' appeared in the foreground to finish the constuction of the new crossing, thankfully they were very obliging and crossed to the opposite side out of view when trains passed!

On the 8th of March 2011 6B33 Theale - Robeston is seen passing Shrivenham in the capable hands of 60096, the spell of settled weather that was sat over the region during this time has made the light for this shot very hazy looking

60096 thumps its way out of Wickwar tunnel with its pay load of 29 loaded tanks while forming 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh on the 23rd of March 2011

Scruffy EWS branded 60096 powers through Gossington on the 25th of September 2010 with 6E41 Westerleigh - Lindsey, on a Saturday this working has a slightly earlier departure time from Westerleigh which helps to avoid the subject being backlit

Now the shot I really wanted of 60099 to finally put my jinx around the loco to bed was this, and after a rapid cloud melt on the afternoon and early evening of the 17th of June 2014 it became possible. So seen here just outside of Lydney is 60099 leading 6B47 Westerleigh - Robeston, happy days!

After a dash from Undy a second shot of TATA beast 60099 was had at Portskewett on the 17th of June 2014 seen on the unmistakeable 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh

After nearly 4 years of being painted in this livery and many, many failed attempts at trying to get the shot in the bag the 17th of June 2014 presented the best chance to date to nail 60099 in its TATA steel livery in decent light with sun on the nose! Seen here trundling through Undy with 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh, don't think that the clear blue sky in the background was a indication to the huge amount of cloud near the sun threatening to yet again spoil the moment, but at last a picture worthy of inclusion was secured!

TATA Steel liveried 60099 thumps through Gossington on the 30th of April 2013 with 6E41 Westerleigh - Lindsey, although the sun is not right on the front there are very few locations if any at all where a really nice angle for the light can be obtained for this working south of Birmingham so this for me will have to do! Any sun at all was lucky in itself as after a beautiful start to the day the cloud soon filled in the blue sky and with only seconds before the next cloud blotted out the sun the silver dream machine popped into view

TATA steel liveried 60099 thumps through Gossington on the 20th of October 2011 with 6E41 Westerleigh - Lindsey, thankfully this service was running around 30 minutes early as the cloud was starting to build from the West, after many ill fated attempts at this loco im glad to have finally nailed it
